2012 starts well for me, again I sold two of my laced-up vases at BLAAK10 Gallery & Store.
And I sold two of my Tutti Frutti bowls! I am very happy! This week I am contacting a few stores and galleries to sell my Tutti Frutti's. I wonder what 2012 is going to offer me ... I applied for an artist-in-residency to work with ceramics for three months in the USA. So, will 2012 offer me an artist-in-residency perhaps?I hope so!

Rossi&Blake is een jong en experimenteel modefotografie en stylingbureau bestaande uit het duo Dorian Blanke en Rose Schildwacht.

Niek and I started a design studio.We 're working on a new website for the both of us. But first I will introduce you his graduation work (just shown at Dutch design week http://www.ddw.nl/)

DRAWING THE PASSAGE OF TIME
Just like a normal clock, Niek de Snoo's project Time Drawings shows the time. But the big hand holds a piece of chalk that drops down as the year progresses. This will fill the space under the clock and literally make the passing of time visible.
After a year the drawing is full and after changing the chalk the process can start all over again. De Snoo: "I wanted to design something that would change in a positive way during use. I also had the need to gain a more expansive sense of time with this clock, to get a grip on time."

"Dip & Dye Vases" from September 10 to October 12 on show at Gallery De Witte Voet, Amsterdam

Aniek Meeldijk, student at the Sint-Lucas Visual Arts, graduated Master of Fine Art, shows her graduation work 2011 this fall "Dip & Dye vases" at Galerie De Witte Voet. The vases have a dip and dye effect, where the shades of color change from light to dark.
The "Dip & Dye vases" will be shown in September and October in Gallery De Witte Voet in Amsterdam. It belongs to the exhibition 'CLASH', where a selection of ceramics is presented of bachelors and alumni of the Sint-Lucas Visual Arts in Ghent. Galerie De Witte Voet focuse on contemporary art. The artists who are represented, using clay as a starting point.

The perfect vase?

It took a lot of time to create this vase. I dug the clay itself, therefore I went to a stone quarry. I made the prototype on the plasterwheel in the EKWC.
When I had the prototype I had to make a mold. That wasn't easy aswell because I made big molds and you have to prepare a lot of plaster in once to pour the liquid plaster into the 'aquariums', see here. The final step is to pour the liquid clay into the mold. And finish the vase.

I wanted to create a perfect vase. But the question is when will I be satisfied? Will it be more interesting if it turn into something new, unexpected. Can we create perfection?

In this teaser (flashvideo) you will see how this vase will perish. After all that work....., the vase turned into dust.

I am inspired and fascinated by vases. A vase can be a functional object as a sculpture, everyday objects can be interpreted in different ways.

The starting point of this ceramic work consists of the idea of ‘a perfect vase’. Because I was working with archetypal 'perfect' forms, the form will always be recognizable throughout the ceramic process. The rules are largely defined by me, but it remains unpredictable results by the properties of matter (clay) itself. Clay is something that no other material can. The material may surprise you, frustrate and dismay.
During my working process I searched constantly for a change or deformity, something I "had no control over." Factors such as the firing process, the glaze or the composition of the clay made each time for a new and surprising result.
The work is presented as a process in which experimentation and research is an important part. Boundaries of perfection and imperfection seem to fade and blend into each other. Click here in Dutch

I told you before that I made a wooden construction to turn my mold. My molds are to big and to heavy to empty by myself.I used some wooden boards to tighten/fix the molds between the squares in the wooden wheels. (1&2) If you pour the liquid clay into the mold, the mould will be even heavier.(3&4) So with the 'wooden wheels' I just have to turn the mold between to tables(5), and empty the liquid clay back into a bucket. After a day or two you can take out the shape and finish the edges.(6&7)

During the Christmas holidays I assisted Linda Quinlan with her project 'Pottery Percussion'.She already showed her work at the Bloomberg space in London.

Linda Quinlan (Ireland) Quinlan’s preoccupations pulsate with a rigour, pouring over subjects that land in the vicinity of art making, spaces close to its mode of entry and the timing of its arrival. Much of her time is spent considering the tone set at entering an artwork and thinking about the rhythm that keeps you buoyant until the time for meaning to step forward and something tangible to seep through. She is drawn to the rhythmic rise and fall that transits between surface and penetration, articulated form and inarticulated sensation, participation and separation. Rhythm as a motif, underlines much of Quinlan’s recent practice, standing for a way to move and a means to shape or build a work of art.

Het uitgangspunt van dit keramisch werk bestaat uit de idee van ‘een perfecte vaas’. Vazen hebben me altijd geïnspireerd en gefascineerd. Een vaas is zowel een functioneel voorwerp als een sculptuur; het alledaagse voorwerp kan op verschillende manieren geïnterpreteerd worden.

Doordat ik werk met archetypische ‘perfecte’ vormen, blijft de vorm steeds herkenbaar gedurende het keramisch proces. De spelregels worden dus grotendeels door mij bepaald, maar toch blijft het resultaat onvoorspelbaar door de eigenschappen van de materie zelf. Klei kan iets wat geen ander materiaal kan. Het materiaal kan je verwonderen, frustreren en onthutsen.
Tijdens mijn werkproces zoek ik voortdurend naar verandering of deformatie, iets waar ik “geen controle over heb”.Factoren zoals het stookproces, het glazuur of de samenstelling van de klei, zorgen telkens voor een nieuw en verrassend resultaat.
Het werk is gepresenteerd zoals een proces, waarvan experiment en onderzoek een belangrijk deel uitmaken. Grenzen van perfectie en imperfectie lijken te vervagen en in elkaar over te vloeien.

Plaster forms & Mould Aniek Meeldijk 2011

'In Clash mogen de dingen botsen. Het atelier keramiek en glasontwerp van Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst Gent brengt werk bijeen dat duidelijk van elkaar verschilt. Clash toont zowel keramische objecten die in een perfecte mal zijn gegoten als kleisculpturen waarin vormen organisch woekeren. Ze geven het spanningsveld aan waarbinnen artistieke ideeën vorm krijgen. De tegenstellingen zorgen voor kritische ruimte en worden niet afgezwakt of weggewerkt. Meer zelfs: de confrontatie of frictie ontstaat niet enkel tussen de werken onderling maar is ook aanwezig in de werken zelf.'

Glaze tests Aniek Meeldijk 2011

'Sommige keramische objecten lijken weggeplukt uit de puristische schilderijen van Amédée Ozenfant en Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (Le Corbusier). De strakke vaasvormen beantwoorden aan de gestandaardiseerde, uitgezuiverde typeobjecten die Ozenfant en Jeanneret in hun retoriek van het Purisme verdedigden (Le Purisme, 1921). Net zoals puristische objecten hebben de vazen een logische vorm die is opgebouwd vanuit vaste punten en een geometrische basisstructuur. Als resultaat van controle en correctie zijn ze gericht op orde. Ze zoeken naar een uitgezuiverde, universele taal en zijn direct leesbaar en herkenbaar. Onversierd tonen ze ook de perfectie van het maakproces: geen decoratie die productiefouten verbergt of valse rijkdom tentoonspreidt, maar zuivere vormen en elastisch gebogen contouren'.

'Meerdere studenten kiezen voor een dynamiek van tegenstellingen. Gesloten vormen worden opengekerfd, stapelingen dreigen ineen te vallen, kleine formaten wisselen af met grote constructies, abstracte volumes roepen figuratie op, en ondanks materiële gelaagdheid (bijvoorbeeld vloeibaar glas dat wordt gewikkeld) is men op zoek naar essentie'.

'Zelfs de perfecte vaas moet er aan geloven. Hoe kan je perfectie combineren met het loslaten van controle? Hoe kan je een archetypisch volume met een ideaal vormgegeven buik en hals ‘uit handen geven’? Men kan experimenteren met stooktemperaturen, glazuurverven, materialen, ‘knipsels’ en vervormingen. Het proces is niet volledig te controleren, maar men heeft wel een idee van het verloop en van de wijze waarop dit kan worden gemanipuleerd. De glazuurverf kan men over het biscuit (de eerste baklaag) laten druipen of door het biscuit laten opzuigen tot kleurbanden die bewegen tussen geometrische vlakken en meer organisch gerafelde patronen. Het is een spel van gebakken aarde en verf die volgens eigen wetten op elkaar inwerken. Tegelijkertijd verdwijnt de strengheid achter decoratie'.

Wanneer verschillende materialen worden onderzocht, kan men bijvoorbeeld een erg kalkhoudende klei gebruiken. Onder invloed van de luchtvochtigheid zwelt de kalk na het bakken, wat de verbrokkeling van de keramiek veroorzaakt. Meteen erodeert ook de perfecte vaas. Fouten sluipen doelbewust in het werkproces en creëren een eigen vorm van imperfectie. En de toeschouwer moet het archetypische object ‘herlezen’: het blanke oppervlak is nu beschreven en de tekst niet op voorhand gekend. Het zijn objecten die de maker en toeschouwer verrassen als mentale collages van tegengestelde concepten en experimenteel onderzoek.'*

About two and a half weeks I will have my Master exam (jury). I am walking on track but still I have to do a lot... Meanwhile I will post some pictures of some vases whom I glazed (not fired yet).

Ariane and I created this bowl. This spontaneous idea started when we decided to make a magazine with our masterclas. Two weeks a go we presented our magazine at school. For our magazine we started little collaborations between our classmates. This bowl is now for sale. Contact me or Ariane if you are interested.

Stone quarry in Wallonie

Today I visit with two friends of mine, Karen Meirsman and Annouk Thys, a stone quarry in Wallonie. It was very beautiful. I had never been to a stone quarry (steengroeve). I will use some of the calcareous sand for one my graduation projects (the sand is the leftover of the calcareous sandstone, common applications are rubble stone, corner, voussoir, window and door sill).

Slib casting

I started this week with slipcasting. Slipcasting is a technique for the mass-production of pottery. A liquid clay body slip is poured into plaster molds and allowed to form a layer, the cast, on the inside cavity of the mould.
I also made a wooden construction to turn my mold. My molds are to big and to heavy to empty by myself. If you pour the liquid clay into the mold, the mould will be even heavier. So with the 'wooden wheels' I just have to turn the mold between to tables, and empty the liquid clay back into a bucket.

Aniek Meeldijk and Emma Hazenak combined their qualities. They met each other in 2002 at the Art Academy St. Joost in Breda in the Netherlands. Emma has been making 'chalk'animations since 2009, and operates as a freelance animator and illustrator. Aniek has been working with ceramics since 2005. This year she will graduate in the Master Fine Arts in Ghent.

The cooperation between Aniek and Emma is a fusion of ceramics, decoration and animation. The project consists of ceramic bowls and an animation film. The film tells a story about the decoration of the bowls. We expect to finish our film in August/September 2011. More info soon.

Finally I have finished my thesis. It was a pain in the ass. I am glad that my computer survived all the rendering and compiling of my videofilm. The 27th of April I have to hand in my thesis. It was also nice to make a film, because I never made a film before.

Unfortunantely I dare not post my film because of the copyrights. The film only exists of youtube films. I do not know exactly how it works with rights. I edited more than hundred youtube films.It 's a film about ceramics in the twenty century.

Royal Delft

Tomorrow I will go to Leerdam with my classmates Ceramics and Glass.
That reminds me of the time that I worked in 'De Porceleyne Fles' Royal Delft two years a go. I was so happy that I was allowed to produce my graduation project: 'Tea Time' at Royal Delft. In January 2008 Royal Delft adopted the crystalproducer Royal Leerdam. Royal Delft is the leading producer of authentic Delft Blue earthenware. I never have been in the Glass factory of Royal Leerdam. I am really curious!

Already a month a go we started little collaborations with our classmates. I started a collaboration with Ariane Heystraeten and I started a little project with Nel Verbeke. This idea to start little collaborations is because we have to organise an exhibition or event for the Masterclasses in March/May 2011.

We started a blog where everybody can introduces his/her work and can propose collaborations, themes to work with and so on.

I posted an image off my chinese 'laced up' vase on our blog and Nel soon responsed with an photograph she took. Nel had the idea to make a page where we connect one photo to the other. We started to link our work with art history and contemporary art. At the end we made a new work together!

By the way Nel and two friends of her will be this weekend in Kortrijk at De invasie van. The invasion of is a platform where young creators from Belgium and The Netherlands sell their unique and innovating products! Tijdens 2 open atelierdagen zet Sint-Lucas Beeldende Kunst de deuren open en ben je meer dan welkom in de ateliers. Er worden dan infosessies over de opleidingen gegeven en je kan vrij en op eigen tempo de ateliers bezoeken. Je ziet studenten en docenten aan het werk. Heb je vragen? De studenten en docenten zijn heel de dag beschikbaar om ze te beantwoorden en je te vertellen hoe de ateliers werken.

De open atelierdagen gaan door op woensdag 16 maart van 11 tot 17u. en zaterdag 21 mei van 11 tot 17u. Infosessies starten om 13u en 15u30.

Ceramic objects @ the CBK, Rotterdam

In de grote vitrine van het Centrum Beeldende Kunst exposeert Aniek Meeldijk keramische objecten. Meeldijk studeerde in 2009 af aan de Willem de Kooning Academie Hogeschool Rotterdam met haar schaduwservies ‘Thee Tijd’. Vlak daarna ging zij met een project van de academie naar Jingdezhen, de porseleinstad van China.

In China maakte ze nieuw werk en in februari 2010 begon ze aan de Master Vrije Kunsten (Keramiek en Glaskunst) in Gent. Meeldijk stelt dat de grenzen tussen kunst en design tegenwoordig niet meer zo duidelijk getrokken worden als vroeger. De objecten vertellen hun eigen verhaal. De vormen volgen daarop haar fantasie.

Yesterday I have turned all the shapes I wanted in the plaster studio of the EKWC. I had a great time overthere. It 's really nice to share your thoughts, drinking coffee and eating together with other artists. I definitely want to do an artist-in-residence one day in the EKWC... Expertise, big kilns, lots of possibilities to do material research.The place to be..:)

In this three minutes short film I will show you first an 'imperfect' vase (in my opinion); not well curved, wide and clumsy. In this 'clumsy' vase I was looking for the archetype vase inside, the more perfect vase.

My friend Borre van der Hoeven helped me a lot wednesday and thursday in the EKWC with making archetypes vases. I couldn't do this alone, because you have to pour for example with this vase 35 liters off plaster in once.

EKWC again! (Plaster wheel part I)

I have to post some good and bad news. Well bad ...isn't that bad after all. We expected at the Sint-Lucas Visual Art school a plaster wheel. Plaster wheel-turning is a method of rotating the plaster, in which the plaster is removed while in a wet state, with hand-held tools or templates. The plaster wheel isn't arrived yet in Ghent, while we already expected the wheel early February. For my graduation work I really wanted the work with this machine because you can create perfect shapes.

To give steady support to the operator's hands when using the templates or tools, a stick, commonly called a "belly-stick" is used. I think this picture is really funny.

The solution for my problem is that I will work next week for a few weeks in the EKWC (European Ceramic Workcentre). Which is great offcourse! The European Ceramic Work Centre annually offers space for 45 (inter-)national participants to work for three months in the centre’s studios. Last summer I assisted architect Rhett Russo in the EKWC. That was a really nice summer-job.

Yes I made it!Luckily I am not 'gebuisd' for my 1st semester, thats how they call it in Belgium if you fail. I didn't know that (Flemish) word before. So I can go on with my workprocess but I have to make some decisions. I have done a lot of material research but now I have to apply this in my graduation work. I have to make a selection and I have to make my concept more clear. The beauty of imperfection perhaps?It is not so easy, I think it is much more than that. Keep you posted!

Before christmas holiday I was telling you that I started practising again with wheel throwing. It had a reason. A few weeks ago I was asked by Linda Quinlan, MA student at the Piet Zwart institute, for joining her graduation project 'Pottery Percussion'. She would like to make a film of my hands when I was throwing. Last week we filmed, we had two days. It was really fun, but also exhausting because I had to hold the position for a while. This week was really busy! Wednesday we could pick up our moulds from China! We had to go to the harbor of Rotterdam, it was really amazing to see all these containers!

The boxes where already put out only we had to find our own moulds, but they were all packed in so it was very difficult to find. After an hour I founded them and I will probably take them to Gent .

The emperor has chosen

Past September, Maik Mager, Vincent Bos and Dico Kruijsse went to Shanghai again to install our 'gesamtkunstwerk' at the studentbienale in Shanghai.

This historical ceramic city, Jingdezhen, used to manufacture all of the emperor’s ceramics.
The emperor ordered all this ceramics in series of three. Keeping the best work for himself and smashing the other two.
In doing so, he insured no one else could ever own a piece of ceramic resembling the emperor’s collection.
In this installation the same choises have been made. The pieces either wait for destruction or eternal glory in the emperor’s collection.

Van aarde naar lava (deel II)

Mangaanoxide wordt in combinatie met roodbakkende massa (ijzerhoudende klei) gebruikt om zwarte klei te verkrijgen, dit gebeurt bij temperaturen boven 1150 C. Dat is te zien bij de derde proef die op 1160 C is gebakken.

Wanneer de klei dus te hoog wordt gestookt, verliest het zijn vorm of wordt vloeibaar en plakt vast aan de oven. Bij proef 4 is de klei vloeibaar geworden, gelukkig had ik een porseleinen schaaltje gemaakt wat de vloeibare klei voor een deel heeft opgevangen.

Deze prachtig vervormde bakstenen liggen bij ons in het atelier en wilde dit graag met mijn volgers delen. Ook is dit voor mij een inspiratiebron, ik ben nu bezig met verschillende soorten klei te hoog te stoken om te kijken wat er gebeurt met de vorm.

Afhankelijk van de klei- soort (van steengoed tot porselein) kan kleimassa dusdanig sinteren dat de keramiek waterdicht wordt (porselein is boven de 1260 graden gestookt volledig gesinterd). Aardewerk daarentegen blijft altijd poreus, omdat aardewerk, wil men het volledig dicht sinteren, zijn vorm verliest of in het ergste geval vloeibaar wordt en in de ovens vastbakt. Deze bakstenen hebben waarschijnlijk in het midden gelegen van een veldoven, door de warmtestromen is het op één bepaalde plek warmer geworden en werden ze voor een deel te hoog gestookt.

De veldoven is het vroegste type van oven. De naam verwijst naar het bakproces en wordt daarom ook wel veldbrand genoemd. Op een open veld worden de droge stenen opeengestapeld met hiertussen een reeks van tunnels (openingen) die worden opgevuld met brandstof. Bij het stoken leiden de tunnels de hitte door de bakstenen heen. Om de hitte te behouden, is de buiten- en bovenzijde bepleisterd met een mengsel van zand, klei en water. In het grootste gedeelte van de steenmassa wordt een temperatuur van 1000°C bereikt. Het centrum is duidelijk warmer dan de randen. Daardoor zijn de stenen in het midden harder gebakken en kunnen ze meer vervormingen hebben. Het bakproces duurt een aantal weken en het verloop is zeer wisselvallig.

Van de zomer tot ongeveer half november heb ik gewerkt als assistente voor Boris van Berkum. Boris heeft een geweldig nieuw atelier op het eiland van Brienenoord in Rotterdam. Het was denk ik één van mijn leukste bijbaantjes!

Op deze foto ben ik een mal aan het indrukken met klei, eerst heb ik een plak klei plat gewalsd, zie foto 1. Daarna stampeer ik de plak klei in de gipsen mal.

Boris van Berkum is uitgenodigd voor een interventie in het Van der Steur gebouw in het Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam. De tentoonstelling begint in februari 2011.

'De installatie toont keramische beeldhouwwerken die op het eerste gezicht doen denken aan totempalen, stapelingen van dier- en mensfiguren. Uit sommige beelden sijpelt gekleurd water, andere beelden roteren langzaam rond hun as. Als een ware neo-kunstenaar transformeert Van Berkum elementen uit de grote wereldculturen tot een eigentijdse dynamische beeldengroep'. (boijmans.nl)

Ik ben hier natuurklei aan het fijnmalen tot poederklei. Van de poederklei maak ik weer gietklei. Die gietklei kan ik weer gieten in gipsen mallen.

Vrije Academie Gent

Sinds september dit jaar geef ik elke dinsdagavond de basiscursus boetseren en keramiek aan de Vrije Academie in Gent.

Deze avonden zijn bedoeld voor diegenen die al de basisbeginselen onder de knie hebben, maar hun vrije gang willen gaan en hun creativiteit willen ontplooien en hun eigen stijl ontdekken. Bij elk probleem zal de begeleider u graag bijstaan hoewel een doorlopende cursus niet geven wordt. De voornaamste technieken in keramiek komen voldoende aan bod zodat iedereen op eigen tempo de werkstukken kan maken die hij of zij wil. Boetseren, opbouwen, decoreren, aanmaken van engobes en oxides, glazuren, het maken van vormen (moule), hoe stamperen, hoe textiel in keramiek te verwerken, hoe/wat en wanneer bakken….Alles komt aan bod. In de loop van het jaar wordt eveneens een initiatie in de Raku techniek en Naked Raku gegeven, met de daar bijhorende voorbereiding der stukken. Enkele malen per jaar wordt er een “Raku Bakdag” georganiseerd.

Meesterklas presentatie

Vandaag was ik aan de beurt om mijn atelierwerk te presenteren. Elke week presenteren twee mensen uit onze meesterklas en trakteren we elkaar op lekkere gebakjes of koekjes en een verse bak koffie of thee. Daar kon ik dus ook niet onderuit en heb mijn zelfgemaakte theepot meegenomen om thee uit te schenken.

Ik begon te vertellen over mijn studieloopbaan en wat ik nu in mijn meesterproef wil gaan onderzoeken.
Zoals ik al eerder aan een publiek gevraagd had om twee vazen te tekenen heb ik mijn meesterklas-genoten ook weer gevraagd om te tekenen. Dit voor mijn onderzoek naar vorm en archetype. Hier over later meer.

In mijn werkproces gaat het nu vooral over vorm en materiaalonderzoek. Ik ben nog steeds gefascineerd door vervormingen die ontstaan door bijvoorbeeld chemische reacties. Daar speelt toeval een rol in. Ik vind het mooi om iets te maken waarin ik de controle uit handen geef. Zodat er iets kan ontstaan dat me kan verbazen. Die chemische reacties kunnen bijvoorbeeld ontstaan tijdens het droogproces en het bakken. Bijvoorbeeld met die glazuurproefjes die ik voor de zomer gemaakt heb. Dit onderzoek wil ik voortzetten in mijn masterproef.

Tijdens de ArtOlive XXL tentoonstelling heb ik één van mijn flesobjecten verkocht!

De winnaar van de ArtOlive jongtalent 2010 is trouwens Elsbeth Ciesluk geworden. Mooi poëtisch werk.
